The regular monthly Sapelo Saltwater Fishing Club meeting was held June 11, 2011. Approximately 65/70 members and guest attended. President Jackie Mull welcomed members and guests to the meeting and Bob Snook blessed the food. Jackie called the meeting to order and thanked our cooks William, Tommy and Bob who grilled the ribs. An abundance of side dishes, as always complimented the meal. Desserts were a must have also. We do have some mighty fine cooks in the club. Mamie Mason made a motion to accept the minutes as presented. Seconded by Perry Mitchell. Motion carried. A motion by Pete Mills to accept the financial statement as presented. Seconded by Perry Mitchell, the motion carried. We currently have in our account, $37,629.54. Mike Young, once again cut our grass. He keeps the grounds manicured. Thanks Mike. Mamie reported that we still need sponsors for the fishing tournament. Items are also needed for the raffle. Any item would be greatly appreciated. The raffle was a big success last year. Desserts are also needed for the captains meeting. Those volunteering to provide a dessert are: Beverly Leaphart, Jeanette Crews, Lorraine Boudreau, Kay Baxter, Toni Childree, Marian Owens, Lisa Young, Marjorie Schuman and Jeannie Moxley. On Thursday, July 28th around 6 P.M., we will gather to fold t-shirts, stuff buckets and finish preparations for the captains meeting on Friday. Lisa Young reported that the fishing tournament the Piggly Wiggly hosted was a big success. They had 26 boats to enter, and 14 boats weighed in. They are planning a bake sale for July 4th. Currently the “Pig” is leading the pack in McIntosh County in Relay for Life. On a sad note, we had two of our club members badly injured in a boating accident on Wednesday, June 22. Alvin Floyd, and John Hodges went out on opening day of Shrimping season. According to the paper, they were taking on water, and gas fumes were present when the bilge pump kicked in and the boat exploded. Alvin is out of the hospital and recuperating at home, and John is still in the hospital is serious condition. Let’s all keep them in our prayers and on our prayer list at church. A gentle reminder to our boating, club members to please observe the no-wake areas around docks. Shore banks around the docks have a problem with erosion due to tides and don’t need additional problems created by boat wakes. Offshore: Kings slow with most coming from deeper water. Spanish: very few schools have been reported. Cobia; good. Black Sea Bass; limit has been cut to 5 fish per person. Inshore: Trout & Red are slow. Flounder; Good with mud minnows. Shrimp; poor. Next meeting, July 9th, 7 P.M., at the clubhouse. With so much going on, cooks are easing off and cooking hamburgers and hot dogs. See you there and bring your appetite. Jeannie Moxley, Secretary
